Whether it is with furniture, art or travel memorabilia one must be careful not to over-accessorize, under-accessorize or mis-match accessories. This is where the ‘Art of Accessorizing’ comes in. First, Spirit Interior Design recommends looking at your home to decide what theme the room is attempting to accomplish. Is it a contemporary, country cottage, southwest, traditional or ethnic style that suits your personality? It is additionally helpful to find inspiration through magazines, books or the internet to get a flavor of the accessories you would like to see in your home.
Once a theme is determined, take the time to identify and place at least one piece you treasure in every room. Purchase accessories that go with the theme selected and color of your room. Occasionally, it is simply a matter of rearranging some items already existing in the space.
Most importantly, Spirit Interior Design recommends selecting items that make you smile and present what you love about the theme chosen upon. Be bold and daring. Stage your accessories in interesting displays by using colors, different shapes, sizes and textures. Trial and error and having fun with your accents will eventually lead you to the theme and décor you desire.
Although accessorizing is considered to be an art form it is ultimately something that comes from your personal taste and that is what is most important about the ‘Art of Accessorizing’. Remember to be unique and try new things, keep an open mind but know what you do like vs. what you do not like; this is what will make your space a true reflection of yourself.
Although there are some basic guidelines Spirit Interior Design recommends sticking to, accessorizing and decorating is purely interpretive. As humans, we all have different tastes, likes and dislikes; this is what makes us and our homes all different and ultimately unique.
